Chapter 9
The room was cold, which only added to its austerity. He could make out at least fifty sarcophagi in the chamber they were in, nestled along the wall, leaning slightly. Another row was on a second tier and a last row on the third, which could be accessed via black wrought iron stairs. The intricately scrolled metal curled and twisted as it ascended each tier. Betrush was on the lower level at the end. His aunt swayed for a moment before she spoke.
“My name is Margaret Oswald. I seek the knowledge of the ancient age of the Spirits. Please hear my request.” Her voice wavered at first but grew stronger.
The crystal’s glow increased and a gravelly crone’s voice echoed in the silent room. “Ask what you will.”
“I seek information concerning a spirit bound to the earth and to a man.”
“Continue…” the voice sounded amused. Mags blinked quickly and Duncan saw a single tear slide down her porcelain cheek. Uncaring of it, Mags said.
“If a man was cursed by a witch so that he may never find rest, what happens to him when his body dies and the soul is free of the shell?”
The withered husk was silent as it thought. Duncan anxiously shifted from one foot to the other. He didn’t have to wait long.
“If a witch performs such a curse, the man’s soul is bound to the Earth for eternity, unable to move on and join the Other. Forever doomed to walk the Earth until the end of time as a lost soul. The magic of the curse fuels and imprisons the soul.” The voice sounded hollow as it reverberated around the room. Goose bumps formed on Duncan’s arm and he tried not to shiver.
“What if the man was the bondmate to the witch who cursed him? What would happen then?” Margaret didn’t look at him when Duncan jerked, she only waited patiently.
“The two would be bound by the curse. The ghost would seek out his bondmate, as his soul would be forever drawn to it. The two must be one.”
“What if the original witch casting the spell had passed on and was reincarnated in a new body. Would the bonding and the curse hold true?” Mags pressed.
“Yes. In cursing the man to never find rest, the witch’s soul would be linked with his, over and over to be born again until the two became one. A bonding goes beyond life, beyond death. It is eternal.”
“How can the curse be broken?” Margaret leaned forward, her palms flat on the crystal’s surface, her gaze intent.
“Each curse is unique. The only way is to break the anger behind it. The rage fueling it must be quenched.” The blue glow blazed bright.
“Thank you, Betrush. Your wisdom is without compare.” Margaret bowed deeply and turned to leave. Duncan trailed after.
“Margaret?” The old woman’s voice rang out and his aunt stilled.
“Ye… yes?” Her voice was so tiny, like a young girl’s.
“It was good to see you again. If only for a moment. I hope you are well, little one.
